Promising New Acne Treatment Trials Using Brown Seaweed Active Ingredient

By Jane Maynard

The majority of the population will suffer from acne at some stage in their lives, typically between the mid teens and early twenties, but a significant number of people continue to suffer far into their adult life. Although not a serious medical condition in itself acne can have a great effect on self-confidence, to the extent that suicide rates amongst those who suffer from this condition are six times higher than in others of their age group.

Although there have been effective treatments available for a number of years they all have unwanted side effects ranging from extreme drying of the skin to potential birth defects when some of the strongest drugs are taken by pregnant women. It's great news then when another, milder, treatment is discovered and becomes available as an over the counter acne treatment.

A placebo controlled clinical trial was recently undertaken at The San Gallicano Dermatological Institute in Rome, Italy, to test the effectiveness of a new treatment based on Brown Seaweed. On a sample of 60 Males between the ages of 12 and 24 with mild to moderate acne the group using the new formula showed significant levels of improvement within three days.

kelpTraditionally acne has been treated by either using a cream based on Benzoyl Peroxide or a course of antibiotics prescribed by a doctor, sometimes both. Acne is caused when an overproduction of the male hormone Androgen which affects the small oil producing glands, or Sebaceous Glands, surrounding the fine hairs found on the face, chest and back. These produce a substance known as Sebum which cleans and lubricates the hair shaft. When the Sebaceous Gland produces too much Sebum the pore becomes blocked with both it and dead skin cells which are in turn fed upon by bacteria resulting in the red, pus filled, spots we are all familiar with.

Although effective in the vast majority of cases, the traditional creams based on ingredients such as Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid can be harsh and drying to the skin if used over a long period of time. This new, brown seaweed based product is far milder to the skin and whilst it is as abrasive as the previous creams does not contain strong chemicals such as Peroxide or Acids. In fact the new product is moisturizing, being based on a more natural ingredient.

The researchers in Rome also found that the active ingredient in the brown seaweed had a similar antibacterial effect against the most common bacteria causing spots, Propionbacterium Acnes, as did more traditional, orally taken, antibiotics but without the side effects which can be found with their long term use and without the need for a prescription.

If you do suffer from acne, whilst it is still a good idea to visit your doctor to rule out any underlying problem such as a hormonal imbalance, the availability of these new treatments will be a great help in achieving clear, healthy skin.

There are many things you can do to improve acne severity. Finding acne help and treatments suitable for your particular case should be your first priority.
